Maximizing and Optimizing Geothermal Resources
Efficient energy use isn’t just good practice—it’s essential for a sustainable future. The GEOSYN project takes this principle to heart by developing systems that extract maximum value from geothermal resources through innovative cascade utilization and smart storage solutions.
The UNIFI (University of Florence) led research team is looking beyond individual components to optimize how the entire system works together. Using numerical simulations, the GEOSYN concept will be assessed to determine the best configuration for maximizing cascading use of residual geothermal heat—ensuring that energy isn’t wasted at any stage.
Underground Thermal Energy Storage
A GEOSYN key innovation approach involves Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES). The SINTEF team is creating numerical models for medium to high-enthalpy UTES plants, allowing for the storage of thermal energy when it’s abundant and retrieval when it’s needed. This technology acts like a thermal battery, dramatically improving system flexibility and efficiency.
Bridging Theory and Practice
By January 2026, a report on optimized UTES integration with GEOSYN solutions will be delivered, providing a purpose-built decision tool for managing and optimizing integrated systems. This will be followed in October 2026 by a comprehensive report on the optimized GEOSYN solution for industrial integration.
The practical outcome of this research will be a flexible, adaptable system that can be tailored to specific industrial settings, considering factors like available space, integration requirements, supply/return temperatures, and thermal demand. By understanding how all elements work together, we can create solutions that are greater than the sum of their parts.
