Involving Communities in the Geothermal Energy Conversation

Technological innovation alone cannot drive the energy transition. Public acceptance and active community engagement are essential for successful implementation of renewable energy solutions like geothermal. The GEOSYN project places these social aspects at the heart of its approach.

Building Trust Through Dialogue

GEOSYN implements a comprehensive engagement strategy targeting citizens, industry stakeholders, and policy makers across Europe. This strategy moves beyond simple information sharing toward meaningful participation that actively shapes how geothermal technologies are developed and deployed in industrial contexts.

The approach is grounded in systematic research into how geothermal heating and cooling applications impact social acceptance and public perception. Understanding that community trust is essential for successful technology deployment, the project dedicates significant resources to listening to and learning from the communities where geothermal solutions will be implemented.

Early project activities include extensive surveys and engagement workshops conducted in Italy and Ukraine, designed to map initial levels of social acceptance and identify the factors that influence public attitudes toward geothermal energy. These workshops bring together diverse participants representing civil society, local authorities, NGOs, potential end-user companies, and other local stakeholders. Through structured dialogue, the project team gathers insights on needs, expectations, concerns, and perspectives regarding the integration of geothermal heating and cooling in industrial processes.

The findings from these engagement activities directly inform the project’s technical development, communication strategies, and policy recommendations. By involving stakeholders from the earliest stages, GEOSYN ensures that the technology development process is responsive to real-world concerns and opportunities, building the foundation for broader acceptance and adoption of geothermal solutions across European industry.

Multiple Paths to Engagement

GEOSYN’s engagement activities operate on several levels:

  • Awareness campaigns targeted specifically at citizens and industries
  • Mobilization and mutual learning workshops involving local communities and authorities
  • Industry Engagement Cafés that provide literacy on geothermal energy and technological findings
  • Online informative sessions with policy makers and authorities
  • Surveys to assess changing levels of acceptance and trust

These activities create a continuous feedback loop, with community input directly influencing technical development and communication strategies.

Measuring Real Change

A unique aspect of GEOSYN’s approach is the rigorous assessment of its impact on social acceptance. By June 2027, the project will conduct a follow-up survey to measure how perceptions have evolved throughout the engagement process. This approach focuses on creating the social foundation necessary for widespread adoption of geothermal solutions.

We believe that when technical innovation meets social acceptance, renewable energy technologies can achieve their full potential. For this reason, the findings from our engagement activities will be compiled in a comprehensive social engagement report in August 2027, offering valuable insights not only for GEOSYN’s continued development but also for future renewable energy projects across Europe. This evidence-based approach to building trust ensures that geothermal technology deployment is guided by community needs and perspectives from the earliest stages.
