Geothermal Energy for Industry: GEOSYN’s Approach

The Untapped Energy Source Beneath European Industries

Beneath our feet lies an abundant, always-on energy source that could revolutionize how industries heat and cool their facilities. Geothermal energy represents one of the most reliable renewable resources available, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather conditions or seasonal variations. Unlike solar or wind power, geothermal provides consistent energy output that perfectly matches the continuous operational needs of industrial processes.

While geothermal energy has been used for heating applications for thousands of years, its potential for advanced industrial heating and cooling applications remains largely untapped across European industries. This represents a significant missed opportunity, particularly considering that thermal energy constitutes the bulk of industrial energy demand – accounting for approximately 81% of total energy consumption in European manufacturing. From the food and beverage sector requiring precise temperature control for pasteurization and preservation, to chemical plants needing high-temperature processes and simultaneous cooling systems, European industries are ideally positioned to harness this underground energy treasure that has been virtually ignored in modern industrial applications.

GEOSYN’s Industrial Mission

The GEOSYN project is working to change this by identifying which industrial sectors could benefit most from innovative geothermal technologies. The GEOSYN team, led by COSVIG in the first Work Package, is conducting a comprehensive analysis of various industries where geothermal heating and cooling integration could significantly reduce carbon emissions while providing reliable energy.

From food production to textile manufacturing, chemical processing to paper production, the team is mapping potential industrial applications where temperature ranges, volumes, and feasibility align perfectly with geothermal capabilities. The consortium is particularly focused on cases where waste heat can be upgraded to higher temperatures suitable for specific industrial processes.

Beyond technical innovation, GEOSYN recognizes that successful geothermal deployment requires building trust and acceptance among communities, industries, and policymakers. The project includes comprehensive stakeholder engagement activities to improve public perception of geothermal energy and address concerns about its implementation. Through targeted communication campaigns, community workshops, and industry engagement initiatives, GEOSYN works to increase awareness of geothermal benefits while fostering transparent dialogue between developers and local communities.

Real Impact Through Innovation

The potential energy savings are substantial. Compared to conventional heating and cooling methods, GEOSYN’s integrated high-temperature heat pump and heat-powered refrigeration system could dramatically improve efficiency while eliminating fossil fuel dependence. This dual-purpose technology maximizes energy use through cascading applications, providing both heating and cooling from a single geothermal source.

Beyond the demonstration site in Italy, project partners are exploring additional locations across Europe to showcase GEOSYN technology’s wide replicability. The consortium is assessing sites with varying geothermal potential, from regions with significant hydrothermal reservoirs to areas with more modest underground heat resources.

To this end, a comprehensive report will detail potential industrial applications, creating a practical roadmap for industries ready to embrace sustainable energy solutions. This analysis will consider not only technical feasibility but also economic viability and regional energy needs.
